What is the Church? While it can be easy to assume that the Church is just one more social club for like-minded people who happen to like Jesus, the biblical understanding of the Church is far more extravagant and breathtaking. Consider just a few of the terms that the Bible uses to refer to the Church: The body of Christ, the bride of Christ, the pillar and buttress of truth, the household of God, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation. This is surely much more than a social club, and yet we very often settle for malnourished understandings of the Church with catchy slogans. (e.g. The Church isn't a building, it's people.) Not only that, but our understanding of what the Church is called to "do" can be just as flimsy and lacking in biblical foundation. The Scriptures, on the other hand, give us a startling picture of the Church.
In this class, Church 101, Pastor Rusten Harris will spend three weeks covering foundational teaching on the Church by considering what the Bible teaches about the founding of the Church, the mission of the Church, and the life and structure of the Church.
